Lesser known than his contemporaries Seydou Keita is the Malian portrait photographer who captured a Bamako society teetering on the brink of post-colonialism throughout the 1950s. Instructing his subjects to pose in overt positions, often using props, these Malians are stoic and proud. His creative aim was to capture the individuality of his clients, but also elevate them into “just a little more than what [they] really are.”
