Print Picks: Resort 2013

Here is our selection of the best prints from the international resort 2013 collections: Christopher Kanes’s blooming roses, Peter Pilotto’s engineered placements (generated by art director Jonny Lu by a special digital kaleidoscope), the simple rose pattern and colour-block placements of Mother of Pearl and Jenny Kao’s 3D mountain abstractions…

It would seem Christopher Kane has a penchant for flowers – well, roses specifically – some of which have been his most popular collections. For Fall 2010 it was black leather contrasted with pretty hand-embroidered flowers patterned from the craftwork of women from the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1800s; for Spring 2012 it was peachy pretty silk cut-out flower appliqué and silk brocade; followed by the gothic roses in bruised shades purple and blue for Fall 2012. This season Kane worked with antique photographs reworked into a soft coffee caramel rose print, a macro take in royal blue and primary green, a textured bronze base placement print splashed with watermelon, cream and royal blue and a more sparse rose print layered with painterly streaks of mauve, emerald, grape and indigo.

As the former partner of artist Damien Hirst, Mother of Pearl designer Maia Norman must have an enviable database of artists to collaborate with. This season, she called on Gary Hume, who, like Hirst, emerged as a leading figure of the 90s London art scene. Many of his works are screenprints, focusing on form and colour, in a minimal, two dimensional style. As an artist with a bold and daring sense of colour his work has translated beautifully as fashion prints.

[JENNY KAO, RESORT 2013]

Mountains have provided print inspiration for a number of collections of late. NY-based Jenny Kao’s streaky mountainous print placements and 3-dimensional glacial ice formations in grey blue are our third print pick, were our third print pick.

[PETER PILOTTO, RESORT 2013]

Each season Peter Pilotto manages to produce a collection powered by mind-blowingly detailed digital print work. For their Resort 2013 collection, the man behind these famed designs is art director Jonny Lu. A digital wizard, Lu has developed a computer program that is responsible for generating the collection’s kaleidoscopic print art. This year the design duo of Peter Pilotto and Lu exhibited their creations at Italy’s prestigious design fair Pitti Immagine in Florence. In collaboration with set designer David White, they created a space against backdrops of the prints, layered with light projections generated from Lu’s digital print program.
