The People’s Painter

African American artist Benny Andrews’ (1930-2006) work reflects “bits and pieces” from his memory and imagination. “I want my images of people to give off a feeling of being real. By real, I don’t mean rendering them photographically, but rather something more abstract, something more than what the viewer usually sees.”

A social realist, Andrews believes that art elevates people, glorifies people’s pasts, and builds self-pride.
